A spellbinding performance by Benedict Cumberbatch lets gripping biopic The Imitation Game unlock the secrets of mathematician and cryptographer Alan Turing, the genius who cracked the Nazis’ Enigma code and paved the way for modern computing. Passing back and forth between Turing’s schooldays in the 1920s; his wartime exploits at Bletchley Park; and his arrest for homosexuality and subsequent suicide in the 1950s, the tale is at its most compelling during the Bletchley Park years. Charles Dance’s bristling naval commander and Keira Knightley’s bluestocking brainbox provide excellent support, but it’s Cumberbatch’s prickly, arrogant, anguished scientist who keeps us rapt.
